One million readers. Listening to the whispers. Day 1
1st September 2020.
Warm sunlight streams through the windows of my little Cumbrian cottage. After a month of rain, a taste of summer again is a luxury.
In this year of the Covid Pause, I and my entertainer colleagues have twiddled our thumbs since March. Singers, dancers, magicians and jugglers, all sat home without a stage or an audience. Cruise ships are anchored idle and corroding, some already sent to scrapyards. Theatres are shut. I am not expecting the phone to ring to book a show any time soon. Possibly not until 2021.
At the end of February, I was all set to continue jumping on and off cruise ships for a week to two at a time, then to fill the gaps in my cruise diary with speaking engagements and performances for corporate events and parties.
But then.
Covid.
Everything in my diary was cancelled.
I downsized from my Brighton house with its 25 seater theatre and magic workshop to a small traditional cottage in the South Lakes in a tiny village with one pub and not even a corner shop. My front door now opens onto a field of sheep and views of Morecambe bay. I had planned to rent the cottage from March as a part-time base to be near my husband who is living in the Kadampa Buddhist centre nearby, then to continue with my usual travels. Instead, this must be the first time in a decade or more that I haven't moved a hundred miles or more each week.
However, as a professional magician that believes in real magic, I have faith that things work out for the best and that wishes are heard and answered.
In 2018, I self-published my memoir Spun Into Gold - The Secret Life of a Female Magician. I wrote it to inspire, entertain and comfort. Each morning before I started writing, I prayed that it would find readers who would take heart from its message and story.
But once it was published, as a busy entertainer, I was too busy to promote it.
This week, I realised that in my new little cottage, with not a gig in sight, my time is my own and these next months are the perfect time to put the same amount of effort into sharing my book as I did in writing it.

I've decided to embark on a journey. One I anticipate will be magical, challenging, perhaps disappointing, hopefully rewarding and most of all an adventure!
As some of you know already, I love a magical adventure!
I've set myself the challenge of sharing my memoir Spun Into Gold - The Secret of a Female Magician with a million readers.
Why a million?
To me, a million means something unexpected, impossible, unlikely. A number that would be marvellous and magical if achieved. If I succeed, it will prove that miracles and mysteries are truly possible. Plus, I'll have a fabulous new story to demonstrate my favourite theory that magic IS real!
One paragraph in my book wrote itself fully formed. When I tried to re-write it, my attempts to edit bounced off as if it were written in Teflon.
This is how magic works.
This is how magic works. You set your intention. You let it go. Then the infinite wisdom of the universe, all the unknown wheels and machinations slowly grind into motion—precisely, accurately. Each cog slots perfectly into the space of the next. As momentum increases, the oil of one step after another lubricates the machinery, the sum of the parts spins faster and faster until there is a happy whirring and a humming of intention, pushing forward towards the end. Nothing will stop the machinery driving to the golden end point of desire. Unless you stick a bloody great foot in it and, to mix metaphors, upset the whole great apple-cart.
This is the way I like to go adventuring.
Set an intention, then 'allow' the result to form and become real, listening to whispers of intuition and taking action steps forward, however unlikely they might seem.
