GLAMOROUS, charming and deliciously entertaining, mistress of illusion Romany appearing at The Pleasance Cabaret Bar is the only female magician taking part in this years Edinburgh International Magic Festival, but she proves in her short forty minute set that anything the boys can do she can do better.

Bedecked in sequins and feathers she baffled and bewildered her audience producing jewellery, birdcages, silken scarves and all manner of wonders out of thin air, as well as discombobulating the crowd with coin and card tricks all done with wit and a disarming smile – the perfect weapons for misdirection.

Classic, small scale illusion is what Romany specialises in, the sort of thing that bewildered Victorian and Edwardian party guests a century or so ago, and the Pleasance Cabaret Bar provided this skilful conjurer with the perfect, intimate environment for her uncanny talents.

If the crowd had been sitting too far away then they couldn’t play the game of guessing how she did it. If they had been too close then the flamboyance and spectacle, which are part and parcel of the illusionist art, would’ve just been a blur. The small space of the Pleasance was, as Goldilocks might say, “just right”.

As well as producing the impossible, Romany also worked her magic on the men in the audience, getting several to help her with her work, including a head-scratchingly clever piece of escapology. Although she did have to make sure than none of her helpers were magicians themselves which is a distinct possibility in the middle of a magic festival.

The highlight of Romany’s act was a spooky piece of paper magic – not a phrase you can say every day – where a string of paper dolls were distinctly maltreated before being finally disposed of. It was a trick that seemed to belong in the realm of the genuinely mysterious.

Cunning, delightful and probably the sort of woman your mother warned you about, if you going to be put under a spell there are worse ways than by spending time in Romany’s enchanting company.
